Newer Ball

Okay, so the ball that I bought kinda stunk. It seemed to have a slow leak and one of the panels started peeling off. So, I took it back to Big5 last night, and they exchanged me straight across for a Rawlings Crossover 10. It was a $5.00 difference, but the manager said he’d eat it since I had to drive back to the store. I’m happier with this ball than with the other. It has 10-panel construction as opposed to 8 and it fits my hand better. It doesn’t have the pump, but the manager at the store indicated that he thinks the pump balls actually do impact a person’s game. I dunno if I believe that, but I liked this ball better, so I went with it.

I was hoping to get in a few shots this morning after assisting in the wardhouse cleanup, but since it’s stake conference weekend, I was unable to do so as Priesthood session started at 9:00. Our wardhouse just had the basketball court refinished and I’m SO upset by the fact that the floor already has a multitude of scrapes across it. It seems as if the people who put on the Halloween party yesterday let the children drag the chairs across the floor when helping clean up. I’m so bothered by it that I’m thinking of asking the various ward leadership members to “remind” people not to drag metal object across the floor. It’s so irritating. People just have no respect.

New Ball

Since I’ve been playing basketball weekly now, I decided to pick up a new ball yesterday. I got the ball on sale at my local Big5. I was going to get another Spalding ball, but this one has the Infusion system that doesn’t require an extra pump. It is a composite leather that, quite frankly, feels great in my hands. The ball needs to be very much broken in, but it’s nice to have something that I just run out to the court and play with when I want to (If I winter weren’t headed this way).

We played a few games with the ball last night, it was GREAT. I really like it. When the ball is pumped, the mechanism will not allow it to get past the max 9lb. pressure, which I think is really cool. Glad to have something that I can learn with now, since I am so NOT a good basketball player.

Testing Flock

Downloaded Flock today. Supposedly this thing is pretty interesting. I’m actually posting to my blog through Flock. So far though, it seems to be missing ONE major thing: post categories. BTW, the default theme is horrible. However, I must note that it did post the entry in my default category, which is better than the WordPress Dash widget I’ve been using. The RSS reader needs a LOT of work. I also don’t like the way it posts my entries as <html>. I’ve created a template so I don’t have do that exact thing. I’ll wait this one out and see what becomes of it.

Should He Be Silenced?

Those of you who know me may understand my “libertarian” nature: I’m all for free speech, gun ownership, and the abolishment of affirmative action; however, I do have my limits. On October 14th, during a speech given at Howard University, Dr. Kamau Kambon delivered one of the most hate-filled speeches I’ve heard in a long time. During the speech, Dr. Kambon made the following comments:

…we are going to exterminate white people because that in my estimation is the only conclusion I have come to. We have to exterminate white people off the face of the planet to solve this problem.

In addition to these remarks, said the following:

White people want to kill you?because that is part of their plan

and that

the only nigger on the planet is the white man and the white woman, and our people are not niggers, they are imitation niggers.

On a personal note, I believe that racial relations are better now in the United States than they ever have been and it pains me a great deal to hear someone utter such hate-filled sentiments. I’m sure that this isn’t the only anti-white rhetoric he’s spewing either (think New Orleans conspiracy theories). Mostly though, I question whether this man’s hate is covered by the First Amendment. Initially I wondered if he’s statements could be considered “fighting words” and were therefore not subject to the protection of the First Amendment. After some review though, I learned that the Supreme Court would probably not classify his remarks as such. However, I thoroughly disagree. Principally I disagree because I believe that in order for us to enjoy the freedoms that we do, we must be a society comprised of largely responsible individuals and this man is not only irresponsible, but dangerous. I also disagree because I think there is a thin line between freedom and anarchy, which I believe Dr. Kambon has crossed. I will quote Justice Robert Jackson in summation of this belief:

The choice is not between order and liberty. It is between liberty with order and anarchy without either. There is danger that, if the court does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact.

Anyone, not just Dr. Kambon, who spews this kind of hate-filled rhetoric should be silenced. The American times of bigotry have largely passed an anyone who fuels the fire for a race war is simple-minded massively ignorant. It is foolish for us to believe that the First Amendment protects the rights of a man who’s clearly murderous intentions equal that of the many heinous figures before him that have carried such thoughts into action. Were I to broadcast on national television that I wanted to kill all blacks because it was only way to finish the race war, I would certainly be punished. The tainted and delusional “Dr.” Kamau Kambon should certainly be no different.

Interestingly enough, the University of North Carolina (his former employer) took their time in removing him from their Africana Studies web page. If you’re interested in letting Dr. Kambon know how you feel, here is his contact information:

phpMyCV Progress

I’m still working on release 0.2 of phpMyCV. Please be patient with me. School is taking up a lot of time, hopefully things will slow down so I have some leeway to work on it.
