We’re Here (Barely)

Well, it took us about 24 hours of driving, but we’re here. We hit the road on Saturday at 4:00 am and rolled into North Platte, Nebraska at about 3:45 pm. That day of driving was decent. The kids did well, considering the length of the drive. That was the end of the decency though.

I took Milaena swimming at the hotel with the hope that she would tire and then go to bed; I should only be so lucky. We ordered in from Applebee’s and then tried to go to bed, but then the wailing and gnashing of teeth started. Long story short, Corinne and I were in for another three-hours-of-sleep night, but not before were nearly lost our cool with Milaena. I was on as thin an edge as I have been in a long time (thanks to a serious lack of sleep) and it was all I could do to control my temper with little miss thing.

This morning, we hit the road at about 4:00 again. We switched off every couple of hours so the other could get some rest. Problem was, Google’s directions to Minneapolis were borked. More about that on cynicious.com. Add a full day’s worth of rain to the directions and you have a recipe for fun. Yeah…right.

The apartment is quite nice, though a bit unprepared for our arrival. We have private garage parking and 9′ ceilings. The community here seems decent (read: no Wal-Mart) and though I haven’t been out and about yet, it sure looks nice.

We got some stuff unpacked and had to make a few runs to the store. I’m beat and I’m SICK of fast food. So, I’m off, more on that Google problem on the other page tomorrow night.

Spring Header

So, I took some time this afternoon to run around an take some photos of the spring bloom here on campus. I do a good bit of walking around here during the day and have noticed the plant life beginning to bloom quite well over the last two weeks. So, enjoy the new header, and click on over to the gallery to check out some of the pics I’ve posted of the spring life.

The Grand Kerfuffle

So, my brother-in-law Jared called last night and asked if was going to go to a show with him. The U has been hosting The Grand Kerfuffle for the last couple of days. Del The Funkee Homosapien was two nights ago (too bad I missed that), but last night I got to see Yellowcard.

I’ve only heard what is played on the radio, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Add to that the fact that I haven’t been to a show like that in 10 years and I was a bit uneasy at first. The opening bands were okay. Over It, was on first, and they were actually better than the second band, Mae. Mae was a little too Emo for me, but Over It rocked it pretty good.

We moved to the front of the crowd as soon as Mae got off the stage. The band came out and it was crush from then on. It had been so long since I’ve been jam-packed in a crowd that it took me a little while to get used to it.

Now, I don’t know any of the songs (for reasons stated above), but the first couple of songs had a little sap to them. After that though, it was all good rock ‘n roll. Okay, so the band does have a bit of Emo to them, but they definitely could rock the crowd. The band is a pretty standard quintet, except for their second front-man, who is a violinist. Needless to say, he plays electric violin and man does he slay it. He alone played to the crowd all night an frankly, I think he kind of carried the show.

The crowd was awesome (though the BO was rank) and the band stated repeatedly that this was the biggest show they’d ever played. Some 8,000 people caused the frontman, Ryan Key, to get a bit emotional. Of course, I’m sure I was about the only one not singing along, but man I had a blast anyway. Sheesh, I’m almost 30. What a trip. Jared kept taking shoes off of crowd surfers and throwing them up on stage, it was hilarious!

Needless to say, I’m glad I went. I’ve gotta say this, whoever decided to put these shows on the week before finals is a genius. It’s just what I needed to get focused.

Man, That’s Fast

I think it’s needless to explain why I LOVE my connection here at the U of U.

Getting Ready

So, May 2nd is coming up quick. I’m trying to survive school so that I can inflict the most pain possible on myself for the summer. Wheee! So, we bought a roof rack and box for our trip. I installed our new Thule (don’t like Yakima) rack on the Breeze yesterday and I must say it looks good. There’s very little road noise from it. We picked up the box last night. We bought all the stuff from REI and got it at a 20% discount, so we’re stoked.

We bought a box instead of a bag, mostly with future use in mind. The box (a Cascade XT 1700) is HUGE, but we need as much space as we can get. Providing I meet my goal this summer, we’re going to buy a newer Toyota 4-Runner or maybe a Nissan Murano and we think the box will work well on an SUV; especially for vacations.

We received our temporary address and are getting the utilities and whatnot set up now. We’re going to have to have broadband when out there so Corinne can work so I guess we’ll be getting cable too (yuck). Of course, with Vonage, that means people will still be able to dial us locally.

I set up a Sub-S Corporation today. I’ve been meaning to set up JCF Inc. for a while now, but haven’t had much reason to do so. Basically, like the box, I did this because I’m thinking forward. Corinne will receive 50% of the dividends and she will be responsible for payroll, etc during the summer. Looks like she gets to learn QuickBooks. Best of all though, when I finally have my own practice, I can shelter myself under the Sub-S. While the tax issues on this will be a bit of a pain, in the long-run, I think I’ll be better off with a Sub-S than an LLC.

Everything seems to be falling into place and as the time gets closer, I get more and more sick. This seems like such a CRAZY decision to have made in such short order. Realistically though, this is not just about having a job, it’s about the opportunity that I have to really make a great life for my family (which isn’t easy when you’re in school) and accomplish something I never though I’d do. So…here’s to a long and hard summer!
