Mason took his first step today. I set him up next to his little Tigger car and he took a step (and almost another) to grab it. Just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, I did it again just now and he made a repeat performance. He’ll be walking soon and Corinne and I are quite happy about that.

So, since I’ve been back to work, I’ve been driving a lot. That being the case, there’s something that has been driving me (nuts, of course). What is it? Drivers on cellphones. Last week, during a single trip to work, I witnessed 4 near accidents by drivers who were too engulfed in their conversation. One was a red light runner, two nearly ran another car off the road, and one lady pulled out in front of another car. All this, in one 25-minute drive.
I’ve had it with drivers on cell-phones. This next year, I will get behind ANY legislation that puts the quash on DWOC (Driving While On the Cellphone). Of course, a total ban is not realistic, but one should be at least required to wear a hands-free set. Though the conversation may not be curbed, at least the driver retains a bit more control.
One recent report stated that driving while on the phone is worse than driving drunk. While I have no data of my own to back that statement up, my observations certainly uphold it. According to the article, a hands-free headset won’t solve the problem, but I disagree. I find that I am much more aware of what’s going on around me when I don’t have the phone strapped to the side of my head, but that’s just me. More so, how is a conversation on a headset any different than a conversation with someone else in the car? Also, my phone lets me dial by speaking, so that may also be a factor that was not considered in the study.
So, as with so many issues, solving the problem is easy, but getting everyone to agree on the solution is more difficult. I for one though feel that a hands-free headset would certainly eliminate some of the dangers of DWOC. Do you agree?
Where to start? We went to St. George for a surprise trip this weekend. It ended up being okay. We attended the annual Call Family Christmas Party last night and it, as always, was a blast. Unfortunately, it will likely be the last year we attend. Here’s why.
After the drive to St. George to see Corinne’s family, and driving around all day today (from Kaysville to Draper), we decided that with two kids, it’s all just too much. So, that aside, today was a great day.
I arose early to get ready before we started the unwrapping. I got Corinne, Milaena, and Mason up around 8:00 and we all got started. The presents came unwrapped quickly and after it was all said and done, we got ready to head to Kaysville to visit Mimi and Papa.
We had a great time there and the kids unwrapped even more presents. Mimi and Papa were sick though so we didn’t stay too long. We headed home for a quick nap, then headed back out again to Grandma Debbie and Grandpa Larry’s house. The kids had a great time there as well and I got to unveil my gift to my step-father. If you want, you can check it out at www.questarloft.com.
After that, we took off for Draper to visit Corinne’s younger brother Jared and his wife. We had an excellent dinner of fajitas and spanish rice and played (and lost) a few rounds of the Newlywed Game. We took off and were home to start cleanup by 11:00pm. Why again will it be the last time we attend the annual party? This day has simply been too much.
Enough of that though. All-in-all, we had a great Christmas and I hope you did too. Here are some memorable things from today:
Jared’s Favorite Gift: The Bathroom Reader
Corinne’s Favorite Gift: 2G iPod Nano
Milaena’s Favorite Gift: Lite-Brite
Mason’s Favorite Gift: Squeaky toys
Highlight of the day: Spending so much time with my wife and kids
Low point of the day: Spending so much time with my wife and kids in the car
I added Gallery2 integration to my WordPress setup. What does this mean? Well, simply put, it means that my gallery looks like the rest of the website now.
Of course, there are still a few bugs to work out, but I’ll get it all fixed up right. In the meantime, click on the gallery link in the header to see what I’ve been up to.
Well, I decided to keep the site going and get rid of my other domain (cynicious.com). I guess that I’ve had the site going for so long it just didn’t make sense to demolish it rather than a much younger and less content-filled site. It also reflects a little about the family, not just myself.
How did I consolidate one wordpress.org blog to another? Easy. In order to accomplish this task, I simply upgraded both sites to WordPress 2.1 Alpha 3. Why? 2.1 contains the same fantastic import/export feature used on wordpress.com (found under the manage option) which exports all posts/pages/comments/categories/etc to an XML file, thus allowing for later import. EASY. Originally, I was going to do all sorts of goofy MySQL stuff, but I’m glad I didn’t have to go that far. Oh, as a side note, I updated the favicon.ico file as well.
So, the other domain is being redirected here. That means, it’s time to update your bookmarks. For some of you, that will mean you’ll only be receiving one RSS feed from me from now on. The only task now is to categorize the 400+ posts under the “Jared” category. Fun.
