Rarely a day goes by that I don’t tell people I work at the prison; thus, rarely a day goes by that I have to explain why I work at the prison. Well, here it is folks: I’m done; no more. I won’t do it.
Two weeks ago in church, I spoke briefly with a man who couldn’t get it through is head that people didn’t go to prison for possessing small amounts of drugs. That being the case, I decided to shut up instead of point out to him that more deaths occur because of “legal” drugs than illegal drugs, or that I truly believe that by decriminalizing and regulating most drugs, America would virtually eliminate the black market trade for said drugs while preventing more drug-related deaths (i.e. one doesn’t OD on heroin because they know the exact quantity and quality of the substance they bought). Of course, I realize that my views on this subject may shock most people, but then again, most people have never given a second thought to drugs other than “they’re wrong.” I’m sorry if that sounds nasty, but it’s how I feel. Sorry, I’ll hop off my soapbox.

So, tonight I was wondering if I could make a shortcut to e-mail files from Finder in OS X. I thought it was pretty logical that an OS advanced as Leopard is would have such a function, so went sniffing.
Under the “Keyboard & Mouse” Preference Pane, click on “Keyboard Shortcuts,” and then the + on the bottom left. Choose Finder as the application and type “Send File” as the Menu Title, then choose your new shortcut’s key combination. It should look similar to the picture below.

Now, whenever you’re in Finder, you can fire off files on-the-fly. SWEET!
Okay, for those of you who don’t already know, Friday was my LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!! EVAR! Okay, so I do have a seminar I have to take this summer, but it requires no homework. Needless to say, I’m beside myself. Corinne and I celebrated together on Friday night (sans kids, thanks Mom!) and had a great time. Corinne finished my graduation invites last night and they are AMAZING. I’m so lucky to have such a talented wife.
I took Milaena on a date today and we saw the movie Horton Hears a Who; it was quite cute. We enjoyed TONS of treats and a shake afterward.
Took the nastiest bike ride every today. 30 mph gusts of wind and LOTS of dust. Yuck. Okay, so I’m off to think more about not having to do anymore homework for a while.
Recently, I wrote to Jim Matheson regarding Diebold. Much to my surprise, I received a personal response from him today. Here is his response:
Dear Mr. Ferguson,
Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding HR 5036, the Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008. I appreciate your interest in the issues facing our country and state, and I am glad for the opportunity to respond to your inquiry. By contacting me on issues important to you, I am better able to represent Utah in Congress.
To ensure that our elections are held with the highest standards, I believe it is necessary to create a paper trail for electronic voting machines. As a number of problems have occurred with electronic voting machines in recent elections, creating a paper trail helps to provide legitimacy in a close election and allows for an independent investigation in the case that these machines malfunction.
As you might know, HR 5036 would authorize reimbursement for localities that convert to paper-ballot voting machines or need help paying for audits afterwards. I voted for this bill when the House of Representatives considered it on April 15, 2008. Unfortunately, the bill did not pass, but I will continue to work to achieve a paper trail so that we can further ensure that the votes of all Americans will be counted correctly.
Again, thank you for sharing your concerns with me. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact my office.
Receiving a response at all was pretty cool, but receiving a personal response…that’s pretty awesome.
Microsoft Word 2008 Weirdness
I upgraded to Office 2008 on my Mac recently and have found that Word’s spell and grammar checking appear to have taken a turn for the worst. See the following examples:
I cannot think of any time in the English language when a comma would be immediately followed by a period. Strange indeed. Must be outsourcing to non-native Engrish speakers again.
