So, I have this little exam coming up. Okay, it’s no little exam, it’s THE exam I’ve been studying for since 2004 when I entered the school of social work. Unfortunately, a lot of the electronic exam prep material is WINDOWS ONLY (lame). So, I set about finding a way to run it on my Mac.
Initially, I thought I’d just use Boot Camp to run Windows on my Mac, but ran into one problem: I don’t have a copy of Windows (well, XP at least). So, I got creative and after considering all of my options, decided I would run my old copy of Windows 98 (yes, 98) on my screamin’ demon of a laptop.
So, I downloaded Parallels and then went to my Mom’s today to find said copy of Windows 98 (I was hoping she had XP, but alas, she did not) and set out for glory. I was soon disappointed. After the harangue of getting the OS installed (hint: you have to change the boot order to CD-ROM, Floppy, HD immediately after your first reboot) I found I could only run the OS at a 640×480 resolution. Hah! That would hardly do. After some digging, I found that simply installing the “Parallels Tools” program while Windows 98 was running got me 1024×768; a resolution I could live with.
So, I then installed my software (which required Microsoft Access, why people continue to use this crap is beyond me) and, after 7 reboots, was up and running with Windows 98 flying along as quickly as I’ve ever seen.
It’s funny, Windows 98 was the first OS I really dug into. I had 3.x and 95 sure, but hated them and never got serious with them. Windows 98 brings back some memories boy (girl, whatever) let me tell you. I just chuckle when I see it. Really, I do…literally…I laugh. My computing life is SO far away from the Windows world now, yet I’m still strangely familiar with the 98 functions and gasp at the horror of simply installing a driver. So, without further ado, and for pure amusement only, I give you Windows 98 on my MacBook Pro:
