Radio Silence

Due to some extremely difficult and unforeseen personal circumstances, I have decided to take a vow of radio silence (as if I’ve been posting that much lately anyway). I have not decided how long this will continue, but until I get my personal affairs together, I won’t be adding any fresh content to the blog.

Update:
For those of you who have asked, I’m okay, but everything is not okay. Thanks for your concern. Really.

Grad School GPA

It’s official. Grad School is over. All things considered, this has been the most hellish year I have ever survived (and it’s actually getting worse). With that in mind though, I do have to say I am proud of my performance on school as I ended my grad career with a 3.906 grade point average. Not bad considering that I finished my undergrad with a 3.876. I actually did better in grad school. Of course, that has come at a pretty serious cost, which I will detail in the coming days.

More McCain Muddiness

So, I just wanted to post a blurb on three things about McCain that I find extremely disturbing. 1) John McCain breaks the rules to which he agreed in attending the Saddleback Church Forum. It also seems likely that not only did he not be in the “cone of silence” during Obama’s portion of the interview, but that he was also prepped with the questions. See for yourself here. 2) If elected, McCain promises to overturn Roe v. Wade. Keep in mind, the decision does not directly deal with abortion, rather it clarifies that privacy is in fact guaranteed under the 14th Amendment. Essentially, he’ll work to deny whatever privacy we have left. See McCain’s own site here. 3) McCain criticizes a study that he voted to authorize. See here. I swear, this man scares me. The again, maybe I should be positive about the thought of being at ware with Iraq, Iran, and Russia all at once. Meanwhile, his ad campaign tries to paint his competitor as an elite celebrity, but did you know that the McCains have ten homes? And finally, McCain’s apparently steals a story in order to further convince the American people that his POW experience somehow makes him fit to lead the country. Dastardly really. See here.

Driving in America: 1950

Driving in America: 1950: “

Disney’s perspective of driving in 1950. Goofy stars as a Jekyll and Hyde character, Mr. Walker/Mr. Wheeler. When he’s a pedestrian he’s mild-mannered and rational; when he’s a driver he’s mad and bad.

It’s amazing to see that the issues we faced over half a century ago haven’t gotten any better. Video posted by our friend Carlton Reid of QuickRelease.TV.

Windows 98 On My MacBook Pro

So, I have this little exam coming up. Okay, it’s no little exam, it’s THE exam I’ve been studying for since 2004 when I entered the school of social work. Unfortunately, a lot of the electronic exam prep material is WINDOWS ONLY (lame). So, I set about finding a way to run it on my Mac.

Initially, I thought I’d just use Boot Camp to run Windows on my Mac, but ran into one problem: I don’t have a copy of Windows (well, XP at least). So, I got creative and after considering all of my options, decided I would run my old copy of Windows 98 (yes, 98) on my screamin’ demon of a laptop.

So, I downloaded Parallels and then went to my Mom’s today to find said copy of Windows 98 (I was hoping she had XP, but alas, she did not) and set out for glory. I was soon disappointed. After the harangue of getting the OS installed (hint: you have to change the boot order to CD-ROM, Floppy, HD immediately after your first reboot) I found I could only run the OS at a 640×480 resolution. Hah! That would hardly do. After some digging, I found that simply installing the “Parallels Tools” program while Windows 98 was running got me 1024×768; a resolution I could live with.

So, I then installed my software (which required Microsoft Access, why people continue to use this crap is beyond me) and, after 7 reboots, was up and running with Windows 98 flying along as quickly as I’ve ever seen.

It’s funny, Windows 98 was the first OS I really dug into. I had 3.x and 95 sure, but hated them and never got serious with them. Windows 98 brings back some memories boy (girl, whatever) let me tell you. I just chuckle when I see it. Really, I do…literally…I laugh. My computing life is SO far away from the Windows world now, yet I’m still strangely familiar with the 98 functions and gasp at the horror of simply installing a driver. So, without further ado, and for pure amusement only, I give you Windows 98 on my MacBook Pro:
