I went to the dentist yesterday. I know a lot of people hate the dentist, but I for one like going. I had braces for a good long time when I was a kid so I’m quite comfortable lying on the dentist’s chair with a bunch of crap in my mouth. No biggie for me.
Furthermore, I LOVE the feeling of having my teeth cleaned. I mean, that may seem strange, but there’s something about the feeling of that little brush spinning at 10,000 RPM under my gum line that makes me feel a little fuzzy inside. I’m not kidding. Also, because I still have a permanent retainer, I love the feeling of getting all the gunk cleaned off from around it. Usually, after a cleaning, I’ll run my tongue over it for at least a week.
Sitting in the chair yesterday was kind of funny. My hygienist gets visibly excited at the thought of scraping things off of people’s teeth. She always tells me this story for a client she saw several years ago. He was from Africa and had never seen a dentist. She spent over three hours cleaning his teeth when she first saw him, then he had to come back the following day for another three hours of scraping! Sheesh. She always jokes that if I’ll come give her therapy once a month she’ll clean the gunk from around my retainer. I’ve never taken her up on it, but I’ve seriously considered it.
I always kind of wondered what her deal is, but yesterday when I was in the chair, I kind of realized that I like working with troubled people a great deal, so it’s not all that weird that she has her “thing” too. I mean, it’s not that far of a stretch I guess. Anyway, I can’t wait to go back. I know that’s silly, but clean teeth are a big thing for me and honestly, if I could go every two months or so, I’d do it.
