Do I Ever Accomplish Work…

…at the City Library?

Not really. I always tell myself I’m going to come down here at get a bunch of stuff done, but then it never happens. Why? Well, the people of downtown SLC are just too damned interesting to ignore. I mean, really. That is a big part of the reason I’m drawn to live down here. Of course, anyone who knows me knows that I just love to observe people. I mean, I guess that says a lot about my chose profession, but it’s been this way for a long time. Years ago before 9/11, I would go to the SLC International Airport and wander around. Just to watch people coming and going. There was the laughter of joy, tears of sorrow, indifference, and seemingly every conceivable emotion in between at the airport. It was just a good time. I would also go to the mall, but that always just seemed to end up as a study in sheer narcissism.

So, here I sit at the City Library, wanting like hell to get some actual work done, but knowing that in all likelihood, I’ll just be sitting here, watching people come and go. Wondering about their lives, next to whom (if anyone) they woke up to in the morning, where they will be eating dinner, and what they do for work. Despite the fact that this all makes for great conversation fodder, it doesn’t really lend itself to real connections with people. At some point, that’s going to have to change.
