It Can’t Be Done?

So, Apple says the 2G iPhone (original) can’t do MMS. Well, I’m glad there are hackers out there who are willing to figure this crap out rather than having everyone shell out for new phones. After some digging and tinkering, MMS is working just fine on my 2G iPhone. Here are the exact steps I used to win the battle. First, you must have an unlocked/jailbroken iPhone with Cydia installed. If you don’t know what that is, read up on RedSn0w or Pwnage at http://blog.iphone-dev.org. I use T-Mobile in the Salt Lake City market. These settings work for sending full-resolution iPhone pics to others. They look great on other iPhones, but not so good on crappy camera phones.

  1. Start Cydia and add this source: http://cydia.alpden.com
  2. Inside Cydia search for “ActivateMMS2G”
  3. Download & install “ActivateMMS2G”
  4. Restart iPhone
  5. Navigate to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network
  6. Enter APN, MMSC, and MMS Proxy (Note: my provider does not require user & password)
    • APN: wap.voicestream.com
    • MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
    • MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.050:8080
    • MMS Max Message Size: 307200
    • MMS UA Prof URL: wap.sonyericsson.com/UAprof/W800iR101.xml (this “spoofs” the server into sending a full-resolution picture, rather than a scaled down version)
  7. Restart iPhone
  8. Open Messaging app and look at the camera icon

So, I know this may be old news for some. Actually, I”m putting it out there because I just want it for personal reference, but whatever. Hope it helps someone.

iPhone Syncing With Google Calendar

I’ve been LONG wanting to be able to sync my iPhone and iCal calendars to a publicly accessible calender. I have used iCalX (garbage, doesn’t support recurring events) and attempted to set up my own phpiCalendar implementation (recently reworked and buggy as hell). So, since I had the day off today, I decided I was going to do some digging to try and figure out a solution. Finally, I found one.

Enter NuevaSync. NuevaSync, according to their website, “allows direct, over-the-air, native synchronization of certain smart phones and PDA devices with public PIM, and calendaring services including Google Calendar. NuevaSync does not need any software installed on your device because it uses synchronization protocols that are already built in.” I’ve messing around with it all day and I’m IMPRESSED! Keep in mind, this is a beta product, so it may be buggy, but so far, I’ve had no problems. Also, keep in mind that the Google Calendar doesn’t support tasks, but Gmail does, so the calendaring function of this combo can’t handle tasks. So, let’s get started with the setup.

Email File Shortcut In OS X

So, tonight I was wondering if I could make a shortcut to e-mail files from Finder in OS X. I thought it was pretty logical that an OS advanced as Leopard is would have such a function, so went sniffing.

Under the “Keyboard & Mouse” Preference Pane, click on “Keyboard Shortcuts,” and then the + on the bottom left. Choose Finder as the application and type “Send File” as the Menu Title, then choose your new shortcut’s key combination. It should look similar to the picture below.

Now, whenever you’re in Finder, you can fire off files on-the-fly. SWEET!

Safari Session Saver

So, I’m an avid Safari user, but I’ve long wanted the browser to have a “save session” option. Well, come to find out, Safari 3 actually saves your session upon closing the browser (not the window). In order to access it, just click “History,” then “Reopen All Windows From Last Session.” GREAT for those times when you need to reboot, but don’t want to lose your place when browsing or doing research. Now, if there were only an option to manually save a session…

Brushed Metal iMac

I can only hope this is correct.
